According to the BJCP, An American IPA is an American version of the historical English style India Pale Ale, brewed using American ingredients and something only described as “attitude”. It has been the most-entered category at the Great American Beer Festival for more than a decade and has been the unwavering, top-selling craft beer style as independent breweries popped up across the country.
Rochester Mills’ offering in the category is our Cornerstone IPA, boasting a citrusy grapefruit-like hop character balanced with a malty backbone. Needless to say it’s a very approachable “gateway” brew that has been a staple at our Pub in Downtown Rochester ever since we opened in 1998 and the first Mills’ beer to find its way into 16 oz. cans (Mug Clubbers know that Lazy Daze Lager was originally offered in 12 oz. cans for a hot minute exclusively at the Pub).
In 2015 (draft only) & 2016 (draft & cans) Rochester Mills made a limited release of Newton’s ALEchemy Double IPA available. Each time this beer was brewed with different hops and malts but both times the recipe was designed to result in 8.8% ABV and 88 IBUs. In 2017 expect a new Double IPA to makes its debut in late April or early May. We may deviate from the Newton’s project formula and present this beer as a new offering.
Additionally, in the spirit of the American IPA, Rochester Mills Production Brewery is planning on mixing things up a bit in 2017, exploring the range of the style and offering four different Quarterly IPA releases. For the first Quarter of 2017 we will continue to make Cornerstone IPA available, but if you’re a super fan, you may want to stock up because it won’t be available after Q1 for distribution (you will still find it at the Pub). We will be following Cornerstone with a yet-to-be-named American Wheat India Pale Ale (AWIPA) in Q2. This brew should appeal to both IPA and wheat beer fans combining the distinctively light tang of wheat malt as the base for a copious amount of hops. We’ll follow this up with two more all new IPAs that are currently under development.
Finally, last year we experimented with a “Sessionable” version of the style made to be enjoyed on the links. Our aptly named “24/7” Twenty Fore! Seven Session IPA found its way to four of Michigan’s golf courses on draft and in cans. Treetops Resort & Spa in Gaylord, Maple Lane Golf Course in Sterling Heights, Crackelwood Golf Club in Macomb and the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Traverse City. The collectable 16 oz. cans sold at each course featured a corresponding signature hole. In 2017 look for 24/7 Session IPA at these courses and more across Michigan.
We hope you are excited as we are about everything that is “hoppening” next year.
